Article Icon 1Abortion Investigation Leads to Three Arrests

Three people associated with a network of Houston pregnancy clinics have been charged with illegally performing abortions and practicing medicine without a license. These are the first charges brought under Texas’s abortion ban, which took effect after the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.

According to a press release from Attorney General Ken Paxton, 48-year-old midwife Maria Margarita Rojas and her 29-year-old employee, Jose Ley, provided abortions to at least three women in the last 18 months and “falsely presented themselves as licensed medical professionals.”

Ley was reportedly licensed to practice medicine in Cuba, but he entered the country illegally in 2022 and later received parole and a green card. He routinely consulted with a third person, 54-year-old nurse practitioner Rubildo Labanino Matos, whose license is currently on probation. Authorities arrested Matos and charged him with practicing medicine without a license.

On Monday, a Waller County judge set the bonds for Rojas and Ley at $1.4 million and $700,000, respectively. They face 20 years in prison if convicted on the abortion-related charges.

Nasdaq announced Tuesday that it will open a new regional headquarters in Dallas, strengthening its ties to the Metroplex after creating a regional management division in Irving last September.

The news from the world’s second-largest stock exchange comes on the heels of last month’s announcement that the New York Stock Exchange would move its Chicago branch to Dallas and rebrand it NYSE Texas. The upstart Texas Stock Exchange is also slated to begin trading operations within the next year.

Nasdaq Chair and CEO Adena Friedman touted the organization’s 800 clients and 200 listed companies in Texas, which represent $1.98 trillion in market capitalization. “With our regional headquarters in Dallas, we look forward to further deepening our relationships with clients and supporting the continued success of the Texas Miracle,” Friedman said.

Gov. Greg Abbott celebrated the news at a luncheon in Dallas yesterday. “Texas has become the home of capital of the United States, and now it is just a natural evolution for Texas to become the home of capital markets in the United States. Texas truly is the epicenter of business in the United States.”

Taylor Sheridan, co-creator of the hit TV series “Yellowstone,” is hosting a country music festival at his North Texas ranch later this year.

Bosque Ranch Live is scheduled for Saturday, September 13, and will feature Drayton Farley, Kaitlin Butts, and Jackson Dean, each of whom has contributed music to “Yellowstone” and its spinoffs. Tickets start at $500, and only 500 are being sold. The premium $1,500 “cowboy campfire” package includes space for an RV, three catered meals, and 10 drink tickets.

Sheridan has previously hosted cutting horse events at his Weatherford ranch, and he’s indicated he plans to offer additional entertainment opportunities there in the future.

My career is built on the art of storytelling,” Sheridan told Billboard. “And nowhere is the storytelling tradition more alive than in country music. My hope is that Bosque Ranch Live is a space where these stories can come to life and sets the stage for more events like it to come.
