Article Icon 1House Finalizes Several Bills

The Texas House passed a bill Tuesday that removes a new provision in state law that allows voters to update their address at their polling place if they have not moved outside the county. Gov. Abbott must sign the measure before it becomes law.

During the regular session earlier this year, State Rep. Matt Shaheen (R-Plano) added the provision to an election reporting bill. Republican activists raised concerns that the change could lead to errors and election fraud. Shaheen sponsored the bill to undo the provision.

The House also approved legislation that prohibits lawmakers from accepting large donations or spending campaign funds during a quorum break. During the first special session, Democrats reportedly received money from Beto O’Rourke’s Powered by People PAC.

Finally, a group of Republicans scuttled a bill that would have lowered the voter-approval tax rate from 3.5% to 2.5% for cities and counties with more than 75,000 people.

A Houston boy was shot and killed Saturday night while playing “ding-dong ditch,” a game that involves ringing a home’s doorbell and then running away. Gonzalo Leon Jr., 42, has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting.

According to police, 11-year-old Julian Guzman was playing the game with his younger cousin. The two boys knocked on the suspect’s door twice within a period of a few minutes. After knocking a third time, Leon allegedly chased them as they fled, firing multiple shots.

Leon, an Army veteran, was allegedly “waiting in the shadows in his own side yard behind a fence” before the shooting. Authorities seized about 20 rifles, shotguns, and pistols from his home.

What harm could they have done? Playing with a doorbell?said a neighbor who spoke to a local news outlet. “For someone to shoot him in the back, they knew they were a kid. What’s the purpose of it?

Article Icon 1Texas Leads Nation in New Apartments

Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas are among the country’s top 10 cities for new apartments expected to be completed this year, according to a new RentCafe analysis. The state’s 81,407 new units lead the nation.

Austin ranks No. 1, with 15,195 new units expected by the end of the year. The Texas capital’s population increased by 10.9% between 2020 and 2024—the highest rate of growth among large U.S. cities—fueled in part by its burgeoning tech sector.

Houston ranks third, with 7,770 new units, while San Antonio’s 5,921 new units are good for the No. 7 spot. Dallas is ninth, with 5,778 units.

Fort Worth’s 3,793 new units earned the No. 20 spot among cities, boosting projected completions for the Dallas-Fort Worth metro—part of a separate metro category—to 28,958, a 22.4% drop from last year’s total and 1,065 behind the first-place New York metro area.
