Good morning! On this day in 1917, Central Texas celebrated “Mebane Day” in honor of Alexander Mebane, a Lockhart farmer who used selective breeding to develop a cotton variety that required little watering, was resistant to severe weather, and had a high yield ratio.
Today we’re covering a theft of $2 million worth of baseball cards and the passing of Texas-born Shelley Duvall, star of The Shining.

Beryl Recovery Going Slowly
CenterPoint Energy, the electricity provider for much of Houston, said Thursday that half a million homes and businesses could be without power until next week.
The delay is stoking frustration about the utility company’s preparedness for Hurricane Beryl. A resident in Fort Bend County reportedly pulled a gun on one of the company’s workers.
The outages have taken many water treatment facilities offline, prompting officials to issue 160 boil water notices in eight counties in Southeast Texas. On Monday, around 154,000 gallons of wastewater were released from a Houston plant.
In addition, more than a quarter of the traffic signals in Houston aren’t working, creating havoc at busy intersections. According to initial estimates, the storm caused about $30 billion in damages.
