Article Icon 1Business Still Without Power 4 Weeks After Beryl

A Houston restaurant is still without power—four weeks after Hurricane Beryl.

Chef Jimmy Nguyen, owner of J.A.M. Viet Kitchen, says he’s losing around $30,000 a week as CenterPoint Energy’s repeated promises of restored power keep going unfulfilled.

He was able to open his restaurant for a few days while renting a generator, but he had to close down again when the rental agreement ended.

Meanwhile, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick sent a letter to the Texas Public Utility Commission asking them to recoup $800 million from CenterPoint earmarked for mobile generators, which the company never acquired.

Article Icon 1San Antonio Man Arrested in Identity Theft Scheme

A 54-year-old man was arrested in San Antonio for an elaborate identity theft scheme, in which he used a stolen identity to live rent-free, buy a Mercedes-Benz, and open 66 fraudulent accounts.

William Richard Holliday allegedly obtained the victim’s information after the victim’s mail was somehow forwarded to Holliday’s previous address.

He subsequently created fake IDs with the victim’s name but his own photo. The fraud was discovered after debt collectors contacted the 65-year-old victim.

Detectives urge the public to ensure their mail isn’t forwarded without their knowledge.

Article Icon 1Houston Church Supports its Members in Space

NASA astronauts Barry Wilmore and Tracy Dyson, both members of Providence Baptist Church near Houston, are currently aboard the International Space Station, with Wilmore’s stay extended due to Boeing Starliner capsule issues.

Their congregation prays for them and has had unique opportunities to connect, including a live video tour of the space station.

Many astronauts of various faiths have practiced their beliefs in space, from taking Communion to reading from the Torah.

The experience of viewing Earth from orbit often reinforces astronauts’ faith and provides a unique perspective on their beliefs.
