GOP Censures Texas Speaker

The Republican Party of Texas voted 55-4 to censure Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan for a lack of fidelity to Republican principles.

The committee defended the censure with four specific examples: his role in the impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton, his appointment of Democrats to chair House committees, not tackling border security, and ignoring educational freedom.

Former President Trump has endorsed a primary challenger to Phelan—David Covey—touting his border security and Second Amendment stances. 

Police Kill Shooter at Osteen Church

A woman wearing a trenchcoat and armed with a long rifle wounded a man and child at televangelist Joel Osteen’s Lakewood megachurch in Houston on Sunday before being killed by police officers.

The woman, in her early 30s, was accompanied by a 5-year-old child when she entered the church and began firing. She hit a child, who’s in critical condition, and an older man who was injured in the leg.

The officers who shot her were off-duty, one from the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and the other a Houston policeman. The woman had threatened that she had a bomb, but no explosives were found.

Severe Weather in Texas

Residents in southeast and central Texas were hit with severe weather on Sunday morning, including rain, golf-ball-sized hail, and power outages.

The storms prompted Tornado Warnings around 9 a.m. for counties north of Houston, with radar-confirmed tornadoes reported in the area.

By Sunday afternoon, the situation had stabilized. Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were still in place for areas of southeast Texas, along with Tornado Watches for Liberty, Polk, and San Jacinto counties, which continued until 3 p.m.
