Article Icon 1Texas Leaders React To Trump Assassination Attempt

Texas political leaders condemned the attempted assassination of former President Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania over the weekend, with many offering prayers of support and expressions of admiration for Trump’s courage and resilience.

Gov. Greg Abbott said Trump is “indomitable,” while Sen. Ted Cruz called Trump’s defiant reaction to the shooting “extraordinary.” State Sen. Roland Gutierrez (D-San Antonio) suggested the need for gun control measures, and Congressman Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) said that “violence begets violence, whether directed at Trump or inspired by him.”

Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, who was sitting about 30 feet away from Trump as he spoke, said he initially thought the shots were fireworks or a balloon popping.

Congressman Ronny Jackson (R-Amarillo) said his nephew was injured at the rally and might have been grazed by a bullet.

At least three people have died from heat-related causes as over 350,000 Southeast Texas customers are still without power a week after Hurricane Beryl hit the area.

On Sunday, Gov. Abbott and Lt. Gov. Patrick excoriated CenterPoint Energy, Houston’s largest electric provider, warning the company could face executive action and regulatory penalties for the prolonged outages.

Meanwhile, a Friday report indicates the federal Department of Energy turned down Centerpoint’s $100 million grant request last year to protect its utility poles and wires from extreme weather events.

Several prominent Texans are set to speak at the 2024 Republican National Convention starting today in Milwaukee.

The list includes Governor Greg Abbott, Senator Ted Cruz, and Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, who switched from the Democratic Party last year. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick canceled his appearance due to Hurricane Beryl’s aftermath in Houston.

The four-day event will also feature Representatives Ronny Jackson, Wesley Hunt, and Monica De La Cruz, as well as Bob Unanue, CEO of Goya Foods.
