Cruz Has Narrow Lead Over Allred

Ted Cruz is leading Democrat U.S. Rep. Colin Allred by a narrow margin of 3 percentage points in the race for the U.S. Senate, according to a recent poll conducted by the University of Houston and Texas Southern University.

The poll surveyed 1,484 likely voters in Texas and found Cruz ahead with 47% support compared to Allred’s 44%. Libertarian Ted Brown draws 3% support, while 6% are undecided.

The margin is similar to that reported by a Manhattan Institute poll earlier this month. In that survey of 600 likely voters, Cruz led Allred 46% to 43%.

CenterPoint Energy Sued For Prolonged Outages

Over 200,000 customers in Southeast Texas are still without power more than a week after Hurricane Beryl came ashore.

Gov. Abbott, back in the state from an economic development trip to Asia, has given CenterPoint Energy until July 31 to come up with a plan to address similar outages more quickly in the future. On Monday, several restaurants affected by the outages filed a class action lawsuit against the power company.

Some frustrated residents have verbally assaulted or even physically threatened utility workers, prompting warnings about such behavior from local and company officials.

Meanwhile, the Biden administration approved individual assistance from FEMA for 16 Southeast Texas counties after nineteen members of the state’s congressional delegation sent a letter to the president requesting the aid.

Texas Rangers Host MLB All-Star Game

The Texas Rangers are hosting this year’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game tonight in Arlington. It’s the first time in 75 years the reigning World Series Champions have hosted the Midsummer Classic.

Unlike the last time the team hosted the All-Star Game in 1995, the league’s best players and the fans who attend the event will get to enjoy the air-conditioned Globe Life Field, where the Rangers have played their home games since 2020.

The American League starting lineup features Texas Rangers 2nd baseman Marcus Semien and Houston Astros left fielder Yordan Alvarez at designated hitter. Astros José Altuve (2B) and Kyle Tucker (OF) are sitting out the contest with injuries, while Rangers Corey Seager (SS) and Kyle Yates (P) are available in relief.

Up to 100,000 visitors are expected to visit the stadium and nearby attractions, and the economic impact on the region is predicted to approach $90 million.
