The Texas Supreme Court ruled Friday that state regulators did nothing wrong in setting electricity prices at the maximum rate during the 2021 winter storm that nearly knocked out the Texas power grid.
During the four days of outages and rolling blackouts between February 15 and 18, regulators set the price of wholesale electricity at $9,000 per megawatt-hour in an effort to incentivize heavy users to cut back and producers to sell power to the grid.
The price hike resulted in $16 billion in overages, costing some users millions and even bankrupting some companies.
