Article Icon 1Storm Rips Through Ellis County

Severe storms in Ellis County early Saturday caused widespread damage that left one man dead and at least four people injured.

Midlothian resident T.J. Bailey, 42, died when his RV was flipped over near the Texas Motorplex drag strip in Ennis, where he had worked as a track specialist. His wife and two of his children were briefly hospitalized.

Winds of up to 97 mph ripped off the storefront of an Ennis supermarket and the roof of a nearby Days Inn hotel, where 20 people were staying at the time. Seven 18-wheelers were overturned on I-35E in Waxahachie.

Golfball-sized hail fell throughout the area. Waxahachie City Council member Travis Smith shared a video on social media showing several downtown buildings with broken windows. See photos here.

Article Icon 1Texas Bitcoin Reserve Proposal Clears Senate

The Texas Senate approved legislation to create a strategic Bitcoin reserve last Thursday, the same day President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a national cryptocurrency reserve.

Senate Bill 21 would establish a fund invested in crypto assets with a market capitalization of at least $500 billion over a 12-month period, a criterion that only Bitcoin currently meets. The fund would be managed by the Texas Comptroller with input from a five-member advisory committee.

Proponents of the legislation say diversifying the state’s cash reserves would provide a hedge against inflation, while critics argue that the volatility of cryptocurrency makes investing in the asset inherently risky.

The bill advanced to the House after a 25-5 bipartisan vote. If enacted, Texas would become one of the first states in the country to establish a strategic Bitcoin reserve.

Dallas area high schools Richardson Lake Highlands and Irving MacArthur scored 91 combined runs in a softball game last Tuesday, setting the record for the third-highest combined score in high school softball history.

Irving MacArthur scored 21 runs in the fourth inning but ultimately lost the 48-43 contest. Prior to the matchup, the Lady Cardinals had only scored 35 runs the entire season, recording only two runs in each of their two previous games.

One team scored 10 or more runs in multiple innings, but the scoreboard could only display single-digit scores. Together, the teams tallied a combined 44 hits, 30 errors, 48 walks, 9 strikeouts, 12 stolen bases, and 567 pitches. Lake Highlands pitcher Rhia McCarty played the entire 7-inning game, throwing 256 pitches.

In a Friday matchup, MacArthur defeated Lake Highlands 25-24 after first falling behind 21-5 in the third inning. It was their first win of the season.
