The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has approved the purchase of 630 acres to expand the Enchanted Rock Natural Area in Gillespie and Llano counties.

The park’s main attraction is the dome-shaped 425-foot-tall pink granite rock, the largest such rock in the United States.

The park boasts 11 miles of hiking trails over 1,644 acres and draws around 250,000 visitors a year, making it one of the most popular state parks in Texas.

The agency has not disclosed the purchase price or given a timetable for when the land will be accessible to the public.

The state Department of Transportation is retiring its TxTag toll services program and will transfer customers with active accounts to the Harris County Toll Road Authority, which administers the EZ TAG program.

TxTag users can still use their toll tags in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, but HCTRA will handle all future billing and customer service.

TxTag users are being notified to update their account information by October 15, 2024, as only active accounts will be transferred to HCTRA. Inactive accounts or those with unpaid balances may face penalties or closure.

TxDOT will retain ownership of toll roads and equipment, and toll rates will remain unchanged. The final transition is pending approval from the Texas Transportation Commission.

Fort Cavazos has opened the long-awaited National Mounted Warrior Museum, a project 13 years in the making that aims to showcase the history and evolution of mounted warfare, from mounted cavalry to modern tanks.

The museum, created in collaboration with the U.S. Army and the National Mounted Warfare Foundation, features interactive displays that allow visitors to get a feel for the daily life of soldiers past and present.

Since World War II, Fort Cavazos has served as a training ground for armored vehicles and other specialized equipment. It is currently home to III Armored Corps.

Admission to the museum is free, and it is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
