Article Icon 1Harris County Revives Controversial Program

Harris County officials voted Thursday to relaunch a guaranteed income program with added restrictions after Attorney General Ken Paxton challenged its legality, citing the Texas Constitution’s ban on giving public funds to individuals.

The initial program would have provided $500 monthly payments to 1,900 participants for 18 months, but it was put on hold when the Texas Supreme Court expressed doubts about its constitutionality.

The revamped initiative, dubbed Uplift Harris 2.0, has been modified to provide pre-loaded cards with spending restrictions.

The Commissioners Court approved the new program 4-1, with Republican Commissioner Tom Ramsey opposing, arguing that the $20.5 million in federal pandemic relief funds could be better spent elsewhere.

The Surfside Beach Police Department has experienced a mass resignation, leaving only one active officer for the town of 640.

The exodus began on Monday when the police chief and three officers resigned, followed by four more resignations on Wednesday.

The sole remaining officer, Kelly Marsh, has been promoted to interim police chief.

The resignations reportedly stem from conflicts between the police department and the Surfside Beach City Council, with a former officer alleging retaliation when arrests involved individuals with ties to council members.

Article Icon 1Venomous “Fireworms” Invade Texas Beaches

Bearded Fireworms, also known as bristle worms, have been washing ashore on large logs near Corpus Christi recently.

This marine creature is known for its painful sting that can burn for up to three hours.

The fireworm has hollow spines along its body filled with neurotoxin, which can easily penetrate human skin if touched.

Experts advise beachgoers to avoid touching these creatures and suggest using tape to remove spines followed by vinegar or isopropyl alcohol application if stung.
